Wartime Mailing

As Veterans Day approaches, Joy and I invite you to join us in honoring the brave men and women who have served our country.

During radio's golden age, the airwaves played a vital role in preserving veterans' memories and bringing their stories to life.

One remarkable example is the Wars from the Past episode from the series Recollections at Thirty. This powerful program wove together a tapestry of American military history, featuring:

  • Abraham Lincoln's moving letter to Mrs. Bixby, read by Tallulah Bankhead, reminding us of the profound sacrifices families make during wartime.
  • George M. Cohan's stirring performance of "Over There," capturing the patriotic spirit that has inspired generations of service members.
  • Frank Munn's "Golden Voice" and Madame Schumann-Heink's poignant message of peace, offering unique perspectives on the human cost of war.
  • Actual recordings from World War II, including President Roosevelt's declaration of war and the sounds of battle from Iwo Jima, bringing history to life with chilling immediacy.

Wars from the Past bridges different eras of American military history, from the Civil War to World War II, highlighting the enduring courage and sacrifice of our veterans. It's a testament to radio's power to connect us with the past, allowing us to experience historical moments in a deeply personal way.

To make it even easier for you to explore these powerful wartime broadcasts, we're thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new RUSC Radio Station: War Time Wonders!

The station features a selection of shows that capture the spirit and sacrifices of wartime America.

This Veterans Day, let's remember and honor those who have served our nation by listening to their stories, in their own words, preserved through the magic of radio.
