Tune the dial to “Macabre” —
8 eerie gems coming to RUSC

Written by Ned Norris

If you enjoy a good shiver after dark, you’re in for a treat. Macabre was one of the last spine-tinglers of radio’s golden age—an eight-episode horror anthology that aired from November 13, 1961 to January 8, 1962. Each episode is a self-contained tale of the supernatural and the unexplained: ghost stories, occult oddities, psychological chillers, and a murder mystery or two, all performed by a rotating cast.

What really makes Macabre hum is the atmosphere—footsteps in empty corridors, whispers in the dark, and that wonderfully eerie music that tightens the screws just so. It’s pure theater of the mind.

Kicking it off is Episode 1, Final Resting Place (November 13, 1961): a newlywed groom agrees to be buried alive for $500 to pay off his car. I’ll confess, I found myself taking big gulps of air when he snaps out of a hypnotic state, panicking—and the moment his wife is frantically digging to find him is genuinely distressing. A terrifically terrifying tale.

I have all eight episodes lined up, and I’ll be adding them to RUSC over the coming week. Keep an ear on the new additions page, pour yourself a nightcap, and let the lights flicker.

Enjoy the chills,
