RUSC MAILING
Written by Ned Norris
I’m delighted to share a long-missing Columbia Workshop production that just turned up: Wilbur Daniel Steele’s The Giant’s Stair. You may remember I featured the trio—A Drink of Water, Luck, and this finale—back in November. I shared the first two on RUSC and wrote about them in November 2025; now, at last, the closer is here to complete the set.
The Giant's Stair was presumed lost for years. What you’ll hear on RUSC comes from fellow OTR enthusiast Kevin Lozaw, who, as a kid in North Dade, Miami, caught a syndicated rebroadcast on a cassette machine sometime between 1968 and 1972—back when Columbia Workshop was turning up in “classic radio” segments and reissue packages rather than as new network fare. That off-air capture preserved a performance that might otherwise have slipped away.
Note unfortunately, the first three minutes are missing, but the quality of the recording is superb. In RUSC there is more information about the Giants Stair and in our description of the story I have added the original narrators introduction so nothing is lost.
Preservation thanks go to Kevin for making and keeping this aircheck more than fifty years ago, and to all the collectors who share and safeguard radio history. Finds like this are reminders that “lost” isn’t always forever—it’s often waiting on a shelf, in a shoebox, or on a humble tape marked only with a date and a memory.
Tune in to RUSC.com let the wind climb the Giant's Stair, and enjoy one of Columbia Workshop’s most atmospheric half-hours. I’d love to hear what you think.
Warmly,
RUSC Old Time Radio
