RUSC MAILING
Written by Ned Norris
Easter always puts a bit of sparkle in old-time radio, and Jack Benny wore that shine beautifully. I’ve lined up three Benny favorites for Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Easter Sunday—each one a brisk, cheerful snapshot from a different era of his show.
Here’s the weekend lineup:
Good Friday – Sunset Boulevard (Mar 25, 1951): Jack is introduced by Don Wilson as “Jack Bunny” , a joke he's really proud of. The cast perform a good-natured send-up of Billy Wilder’s hit story. Mary’s tart asides, Don’s genial gravitas, Dennis’s sunshine, Rochester’s timing, and Phil Harris in full swing—Hollywood gloss with Easter cheer.
Easter Saturday – Easter Parade (Apr 5, 1953): Jack primps for the Beverly Hills promenade. By ’53, Bob Crosby’s at the baton, giving the show a relaxed, breezy lift. Dennis glides, Don keeps things moving, and Jack’s wallet gets its annual workout.
Easter Sunday – Ah, Wilderness! (Apr 12, 1936): Back to the Jell-O years—Don’s sponsor patter (six flavors and all), Mary’s playful quips, and Kenny Baker’s bright tenor framing a lighthearted nod to Eugene O’Neill. Early Benny at his spry, variety-show best.
If you try them in chronological order, you’ll hear the program grow from its lively, sponsor-forward 1930s format into the polished, star-savvy machine of the early ’50s—without losing an ounce of warmth.
I’ve also put together a special page with 20+ Easter-themed shows to enjoy—comedies, dramas, and musical treats that catch the season’s spirit, including another delightful Benny Easter program. Perfect for a relaxed Easter weekend.
I hope these bring a smile (and maybe inspire a bonnet or two). If you enjoy any of the shows, be sure to give them a star rating and review inside RUSC.com.
Wishing you peace and happiness at Easter.
Warmly,
Ned & Joy Norris
