Celebrating 86 Years of
"The Wizard of Oz" Magic!

Written by Ned Norris

Well, howdy there! It’s hard to believe it’s been a whopping 86 years since The Wizard of Oz first graced the silver screen on August 25, 1939. Can you hear the echoes of Judy Garland’s enchanting voice singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”? This film truly is a treasure, not just for its dazzling Technicolor but for the special place it holds in our hearts and the memories it continues to inspire.

Did you know that the magic started even before its official release? On June 29, 1939, in its final episode of the season, the Good News radio series turned its spotlight on this Hollywood gem. Listeners were treated to lively performances by Meredith Willson and his orchestra, introducing the film’s delightful tunes while the stars Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, and Bert Lahr provided a behind-the-scenes peek into the world of Hollywood. I still get chills thinking about young Judy being introduced to the iconic “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”!

And let’s not forget about that splendid Christmas Day in 1950 when the Lux Radio Theater treated us to a beautiful adaptation of this beloved story, with Judy reprising her role as Dorothy. It was pure magic, letting our imaginations run wild as we painted vivid pictures of the Land of Oz without needing a single frame of film.

As we celebrate the legacy of The Wizard of Oz, I am reminded of how powerful storytelling can be. It transcends generations and brings us together, doesn't it? This classic tale speaks to our hearts about friendship, courage, and the quest for home.

In the words of Glinda the Good Witch, "You had the power all along, my dear." Let’s hold on to that magic as we embrace the enchanting world of Oz for many more years to come.

If you haven't already, be sure to check in to RUSC.com and listen to both of these wonderful episodes. Here’s to celebrating 86 marvelous years of wonder and imagination!

Happy listening, my friend,
