RUSC MAILING
Written by Ned Norris
If Western harmony makes your heart ride tall in the saddle, pull up a chair. I’ve been revisiting the Sons of the Pioneers on radio, and it’s pure prairie gold—polished, lyrical, and unmistakably American.
Their radio trail runs in two strong strands. First, a compact set of late-’40s, 15-minute transcriptions—about 13 surviving—tight as a lariat and perfect for a quick listen. Then comes the big canvas: Lucky U Ranch (1951–52), a half-hour showcase that many collectors prize most, not least because so many copies come from Armed Forces Radio Service discs. AFRS usually means clean, faithful sound—and you can hear every shimmer of fiddle and ring of guitar.
What you’ll hear in Lucky U Ranch:
- Format: A friendly “visit to the ranch” with three to five feature numbers, light patter, and a spotlight or two for the pickers and fiddlers.
- Repertoire: Cornerstones like Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Cool Water, Timber Trail, Blue Prairie—and mid‑century favorites such as (Ghost) Riders in the Sky and Blue Shadows on the Trail.
- Lineup and sound: The early ’50s core often centers on Lloyd Perryman and Tommy Doss, with Ken Curtis in the mix and the Farr brothers powering the engine—Hugh’s fiddle filigree and Karl’s nimble guitar. Bob Nolan had stepped back, but his songs still carry the water.
- Quality and survival: Over 60 Lucky U Ranch programs exist, many in excellent AFRS fidelity. You may hear generic opens/closes (AFRS trimmed commercials), but the music is prime Pioneers.
Elsewhere on the dial, you’ll bump into them on The Roy Rogers Show, AFRS morale favorite Command Performance, and even Texas’s 10‑2‑4 Ranch (Dr Pepper’s home on the range).
Why it still sings? Because radio loved their discipline. The harmonies are exacting but never stiff, Nolan’s songs paint the wide country in soft light, and the Farrs give everything a handsome gleam. Lucky U Ranch lets you hear it all, unhurried and beautifully balanced.
Swing by RUSC this week; I’m adding new Sons of the Pioneers shows daily—ideal background listening as you unwind or tackle the day!
Happy listening, pardner.
